Impaired Sensitivity to Thyroid Hormone (ISTH) is a term which describes a number of genetic defects which interfere with the working of thyroid hormones. In many people it causes few symptoms. In some it causes low energy or constant fatigue or symptoms similar to hypothyroidism. In others it causes heart disease, cancer, autoimmune conditions, women’s health issues, strokes, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, depression and many other conditions.ISTH is a recognised medical condition although many doctors have not heard of it. Some doctors may however be aware of it under another name such as Thyroid Hormone Resistance or Resistance to Thyroid Hormone. Those doctors who are aware of the condition view it as extremely rare (1 in 50,000) and associated with severe disability. It is therefore not something to consider as a possibility when they see a patient with hypothyroid symptoms but normal thyroid blood tests. They are instead likely to give a diagnosis of fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or depression.ISTH is even less likely to be considered as a possible cause of heart disease, cancer, autoimmune conditions, women’s health issues, strokes, depression and other mental health conditions. The stated incidence of ISTH at about 1 in 50,000 does not take account of the genetic causes still to be identified and it is likely that the condition is common but rarely diagnosed or treated.ISTH is easy and inexpensive to treat and good health can be restored. Although there is significant medical research on ISTH, so far this is mainly limited to conditions associated with severe disability. It is also a sad fact that new ideas in medicine can take years, and frequently decades, before gaining widespread recognition. Many people with severe health issues caused by ISTH have tried all types of doctors and alternative health providers but with little or no benefit. My purpose in writing this book is to increase awareness of the condition, including how it can be recognised and easily, effectively and inexpensively treated.I have been researching this subject for over ten years. My conclusions are based on information, much of which has been available for many years, but has been largely overlooked. Starting with Dr Eugene Hertoghe’s famous lecture in New York in 1914 (over 100 years ago) and Dr Broda Barnes’ book from 1976 (over 40 years ago) and combining their work with more recent published medical research has enabled me to build this picture of ISTH.“Of all the problems that can affect physical or mental health, none is more common than thyroid gland disturbance. None is more readily and inexpensively corrected. And none is more often untreated, and even unsuspected.” Broda O. Barnes, M.D., and Lawrence Galton (1976)This book brings together information from many sources and presents it in a concise, easy to read form suitable for people with no medical knowledge. The key information in the book is from published medical research and official medical websites and references to the sources have been included at the end of each chapter. The book has been extensively revised and extended in March 2017.
